Apollo and Daphne is a marble figure sculpture created by the Italian sculptor Zion Lorenzo Bernini in circa 1622~1623 (or 1622~1625). The original work is now in the Museum of the Bosges in Rome, Italy. The sculpture shows the moment when Apollo’s hand touches Daphne’s body. Both of them are in the wind-running movement, and the body is light and beautiful. In the performance of the sculpture, Daphne’s body is so warm and true, she began to become a laurel tree, walking like a flying leg transformed into a trunk implanted in the earth, fluttering hair and stretched fingers sewed leaves.

However, Daphne’s entire body still has a volley-like attitude. She turned her head, her eyes squinted, her eyes changed from horror to numbness. Apollo watched Daphne turn into a laurel tree, and her expression turned from surprise to sadness, but she was unable to recover. One of his hands was still on Daphne’s body, and the other hand stretched diagonally downwards, forming a straight line with Daphne’s arm. This is really a beautiful and classic marble statue.

The reason why “Apollo and Daphne” can be shocked is that its entire work is in a dramatic state of intense movement. Marble seems to lose weight in the hands of Benigni, Apollo’s clothes and Daphne’s long hair. It floats with the wind; contrasting with this lightness is the dignified power of the character’s body, while the asymmetrical contour lines render a dramatic situation, giving people a feeling of being brisk and passionate, both lively and uneasy. Italian sculptor Peter Rockwell: “Any sculptor who saw Bernini’s ‘Apollo and Daphne’ can only leave with surprise.”
